United Nations mission statement
Erica introduced the mission statement of the UN to the group:
The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights, The UN works on a broad range of fundamental issues, from sustainable development, environment and refugees protection, disaster relief, counter terrorism, disarmament and non-proliferation, to promoting democracy human rights, governance, economic and social development and international health, clearing landmines, expanding food production, and more,
National Model United Nations mission statement
Erica asked the group if anyone didn’t know what the role of model UN is (one didn’t), then read the mission statement:
To provide understanding of the work of the United Nations, build skills in diplomacy and compromise and provide preparation resources for delegates.
Expectations for the semester
- Involvement in fundraising activities by all members (will help us pay for our website, shirts, social activities, and conferences.)
- Transparency- if you have an issue with someone, please be an adult about it and have an officer mediate.
- Key! Became slightly catty last year
- The organization is more than about “having fun.” Although we will definitely be having fun throughout the semester, it seems like in the past, many people got involved simply to have a good time.
Service opportunities
Kenzie explained the possible philanthropies for the next upcoming weeks:
-Walks for water
-Oct 14- Water Conservation Walk: Stage 1 water crisis in San Diego and the southwest U.S. 5k walk as group; $10 for t-shirt (not mandatory) and the proceeds go to eco life and Habitat for Humanity
Nov 14- Walk for Water for Central Uganda. Water crisis because of war, proceeds to water system to school without one.
Reasons to go: feels good, great on resume, and group bonding
